Student Life

Behavior and Discipline

Greenwood is committed to creating a community of solid values and high standards and therefore focuses on a community-wide theme of respect. While our program includes clear and consistent behavior expectations, we strongly feel that the emphasis of behavior education needs to be on processing prevention and learning experiences, not just on discipline. Of course the goal is to give students tools and strategies to make better choices and for our boys to reach a level of independence and internalize their own value system. When a student makes a mistake it is always valued as a learning opportunity for the boy who made the mistake as well as for the entire community. When consequences need to be implemented, they will be consistent, fair, and timely.

There are also reward systems that recognize positive behavior. This helps students recognize when they have been successful. Positive behavior is rewarded with a “Green Slip;” the goal here is to “catch students being good,” and reward them for their good behavior.
