Life Lessons: Greenwood School Hunger Banquet Teaches Students about Income Disparity

On April 18th, Greenwood hosted its first ever Hunger Banquet for Greenwood students and faculty. The event, organized on a volunteer basis by Adam Jones, saw the community randomly broken down into three groups, with 15% being assigned to a “high income” bracket, 25% to a “middle income” bracket, and 60% to a “low income bracket, reflective of the global reality. Meals were served to these groups that matched their income level, such as steak for high income, and rice for low income. Students and faculty role played the entire experience, which featured many unique twists as the lunch progressed.

Student Drew Simmons looks nervous as he reaches his hand into a bag to choose his income level for the day.

The goal of this experience was to for boys and adults in the Greenwood community to experience in a safe way what other people's lives are like, gain an awareness of our place in the world, and reflect upon the negative effects of income disparity on our society. Afterwards, students and faculty reflected on the experience in a roundtable discussion which allowed everyone to vocalize their feelings.

Many students remarked that it was quite a challenge to broach such a difficult subject with the right balance of light humor and sobering reality, but almost everyone said they came away from the experience having learned something new.

Assistant Headmaster Reed Duncan tries to improve his "lot in life" by becoming a servant of the "upper class".

A bare lunch of rice & beans for Greenwood's "middle class" citizens.
