The Greenwood School: The Preeminent Boarding School for Boys with Learning Differences

We are proud to announce that Science teacher & dorm parent Don Fitz-Roy was recently
awarded a $1,500 grant from EDS foundation. Don wrote this grant to enhance the science
curriculum's use of technology by purchasing a series of "smart probes" that allow
real-time data from water quality tests, physics inquiries, and chemistry experiments
to be downloaded directly into students' laptops and personal computers.
|
|
We have already begun using the probes with this year's spring science
curriculum. These devices can be used to conduct water quality testing and analyze the
results from a number of real world sites. These sites include Watt Pond (Greenwood’s
on-campus natural pond) and the Connecticut River, as well as a nearby stream that runs
by a paper manufacturing plant in Putney. By comparing and contrasting the results of
their tests, students will gain hands-on experience with scientific analysis and will
develop an appreciation for the importance of water quality monitoring and environmental
preservation.

Several Greenwood students accompanied Don and Headmaster Stewart Miller on a trip to
the Vermont Governor’s residence in Montpelier, VT to receive the grant money on April
19th. Said Don, “It is my hope that students will gain an increased understanding of
environmental science concepts and the scientific method through the use of this
innovative and technological approach to traditional methodology.”
